The Story of Tommy’s Lounge: A Place to Belong

In September 2022, just a stone’s throw from Huddersfield Train Station, a dream became a reality. Tommy’s Lounge was born from the combined vision of Jennie Thorn and her mum, Sue Longbottom.

Jennie had always envisioned a vibrant coffee lounge that served the community, while Sue longed for a relaxed, cozy sanctuary where you could savor a brew without ever feeling rushed out the door. Together, with the support of Jennie’s husband, they didn’t just build a Coffee Lounge; they built a home.

More Than Just a Coffee Lounge

From the very first sketch, Tommy’s was designed with a specific purpose: to create a space where Veterans feel an immediate sense of ease. We know that sometimes civilian life can feel loud and disconnected. Tommy’s is the "neutral ground" where you can sit back, talk freely, and know that you are among people who "get it."

A Living Wall of Memories

When you walk into Tommy’s, you’ll notice the décor is different. Our walls aren't just decorated; they are honoured. Every piece of military memorabilia, every photograph, and every bit of artwork has been donated by individuals from their own personal history.

We invite you to be a part of this legacy. We welcome all visitors to bring a piece of their own "living memories" to add to our walls, ensuring that the stories of those who served are never forgotten, but are shared and enjoyed by everyone who pulls up a chair.

The Hub for Tommy’s Voice

Tommy’s Lounge is proud to serve as the physical hub for Tommy’s Voice Charity. We believe that support should be accessible, informal, and immediate. Beyond the coffee and conversation, we provide a front line of assistance for those navigating the complexities of post-service life.

As the heart of the charity, we offer practical help on the ground, including:

  • Self-Help Referrals: Guiding you toward the right professional resources when you're ready.

  • Veterans ID Cards: Helping you secure the recognition and benefits you've earned.

  • Advocacy & Communication: Assisting with local authorities regarding housing, benefits, and essential services.

While our doors are open to everyone, our heart belongs to our Veterans and their families. We offer more than just a brew, we offer a lifeline. Whether you’re having a difficult day, feeling the weight of isolation, or simply need help navigating "the system," there is always a seat, a warm welcome, and a knowledgeable ear to listen.

At Tommy’s, you don't have to navigate the civilian world isolated.

Come on in. The kettle is on, and the door is open.

NO ONE BREWS ALONE

The Future

Looking to the Future: Paving the Way

Our mission doesn’t end with the final pour of the day. As we look to the future, our goal is simple yet unwavering: Consistency. For a Veteran, knowing that a safe space will be there tomorrow, next month, and next year is the foundation of resilience.

We are committed to paving a new way for Veteran support, one that moves away from clinical waiting rooms and toward the warmth of a community hub. By staying resilient in our mission and growing our network through Tommy’s, we are ensuring that the bridge between service and civilian life remains strong and accessible for generations to come.

We aren't just building a lounge; we are building a legacy of connection. Thank you for walking this path with us.
